At Grandmother's Table : Women Write About Food, Life, and the Enduring Bond between Grandmothers and Granddaughters
Published in Hardcover by Fairview Pr (21 August, 2000)
Author: Ellen Perry Berkeley
Average review score:

A heart-warming book that makes a wonderful gift...
I was given this book by my best friend; we both feel a strong attachment to our gandmothers. Even just flipping through it, I knew right away that I'd like it. The quality of the paper, the photographs, layout, binding are all excellent. Once I started reading it, I was glued. It's not a cookbook to use as a resource; it's a book of essays, each accompanied by a recipe. Each essay is a like a snapshot into a family of long ago, and each woman is writing about my favorite topic - the strong "grandmother-pull" she feels. Many of the women write of grandmothers they barely knew but with whom they feel some connection, while others write of grandmothers who raised them or who were active in their families. In all cases, the love, respect, awe, and gratitude the writers feel toward their grandmothers is evident in each piece. The recipes are a fun supplement to each essay. They tell another story of the grandmother in the way they were handed down or written down, and I swore I could smell the smells of each grandmother's cooking as I read. I read this book cover to cover and hated to see it end. It transported me to times long gone, times of grace, times with my grandmother, Grace.

Would grace any home or community library collection
At Grandmother's Table offers a fascinating collection of writings about food, life, and the enduring bond between grandmothers and their granddaughters. Enhanced with the occasional recipes such as Grandma Riello's Spaghetti Sauce, Mildred's Wild Blackberry Tarts, and Grandma Rendler's Apple Strudel, At Grandmother's Table offers the intimate and candid thoughts of eight women, richly illustrated with vintage photographs and original drawings. At Grandmother's Table would grace any home or community library collection and is very highly recommended reading for those who appreciate nostalgia, family traditions, and generational legacies of the kitchen.

A feast for the soul...and tummy
This book is more than memories and recipes, it presents a cross section of cultures, personalities, and tastes. Each grandmother's story touches the heart--some are humorous, others poignant, but all reminded me in some way of my grandmothers. As a grandmother, it made me reflect on my role in my grandchildren's lives. The recipes are an added bonus. Delicious! And, most important, doable!

Auschwitz, Ohio: From the Quatrain Some Die Mad

Auschwitz, Ohio
This is one book every person dealing with mental health should read, I could not put this book down till I finished it. It tells of the horrors and treatment of the mentally ill in the late fifties and early sixties in Ohio. The book tells the awesome truth about this subject. I am currently working at this particular hospital, and have been since 1972, I have heard of some of the treatment. All of the stories are not just about the injustice to the mentally ill, it also tells of the programs that were established to help the mentaly ill. I highly recommend reading this book and the other in the series of, Some Die Mad.

Couldn't Be Better
Auschwitz, Ohio couldn't be better... it absolutely is the finest work on Fifties Angst I''ve ever read. You can FEEL the suffocation....

Riveting!
I can't say enough. Some images keep me awake at night. This is literature.

Daniel's Ride
Published in Hardcover by Free Will Press (01 May, 2001)
Authors: Michael Perry and Lee Ballard
Average review score:

Daniel's Ride
This is a wonderful story for kids, and adults, about low riders, a subject that is often misunderstood and maligned. Not much is availibale for children on the topic, especially told from their point of view. DANIEL'S RIDE is about much more than Hector's promise of his cool car to his little brother Daniel. It's about hopes and dreams and relationships, all of which lead to the story's broad appeal. Every year I buy a least one book for a friend in Arizona who is a reading specialist working in a bilingual setting. This book has been the biggest hit yet! Her students in Tucson love it and can't get enough of it. Perry and his illustrator Lee Ballard have a real hit here!

Very highly recommended
Daniel eagerly awaits a promised ride in his older brother Hector '63 Impala convertible “complete with spider hydraulics and gold wire wheels.” Together they celebrate the first weekend of summer vacation. They turn up the volume on their music and cruise, transforming the Impala into “a funky barrio carnival ride.” They join the cool cars cruising the beech before visiting the cousin. When the ride is over, Hector promise the car to Daniel if he finishes high school and plans to go to college.

Author Michael Perry brings his street-savvy writing style to children’s books in DANIEL’S RIDE. With the lyricism gained with his musical background, and an intense understanding of what motivates children, Perry creates a fun, hotrodding tale of sun, brothers and cars certain to delight young readers. Crisp, believable, readable dialog combine lends the story vibrant energy and promise. Very highly recommended.

Daniel's Ride is tite
Daniel's Ride is an exellent book for children. I should know because I am a child. I think this is a good book because people usually don't write about lowriders or books for kids who are bilingual. This book has both of those subjects.

David Kopay Story

David Kopay Story
This book is of a true hero, David Kopay. What a story of courage and inspiration. If you want to be inspired, read this book. One of the best!!

well-written, gutsy and illuminating
This is David Kopay's account of growing up gay back when there were very few books or support groups to turn to, which makes it stand even taller. He describes his experience as a college and professional football player as well as being in a fraternity. I find him candid, readable and likeable. He never asked for any special favours, just the right to live his life his way and do what he knew how to do.

I'm proud that David is a fellow Husky; his name adds honour to the reputation of the University of Washington, both as a hard-nosed athlete who hit like a freight train and as a man of courage. Just about anyone could benefit from reading his book.

The Pioneer of Gay Sports Stories
Before Dan Woog's "Jocks," before "The Front Runner," before the whole genre, David Kopay rocked the homophobic world of sports by coming out and telling his story. An amazing personal journey and a great historic account, this is a must-have for your gay library. Not as sexy as you'd think, instead it's a harrowing and touching tale of the first pro football player - the first jock of the 20th century - to come out big time. We all owe this man a lot, but beyond that, this is a compelling story.

The 97th Step
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Ace Books (November, 1989)
Author: Steve Perry
Average review score:

A Matter of Enlightenment
The 97th Step is the fourth novel written in the Matador series, but is the first in internal chronology. It is the story Mwili Kalamu, a farm boy from Cibule, who ran away from home at the age of fourteen and who is destined to become Pen, the teacher of Emile Antoon Khadaji.

Leaving Cibule, he takes the name of Ferret and becomes a lane runner, living at the fringes of society and stealing to make ends meet. During this period, he becomes the partner of Bennet Gworn, a fellow laner, but then has to abandon him when a heist goes bad. Later, he becomes the partner of Stoll, smuggling illegal merchandise, and meets Shar, an exotic dancer who sees him as a soul mate. All falls apart, however, when Gworn gets out of prison and comes looking for him.

After Gworn kills Stoll and Shar, and he kills Gworn, Ferret tries to forget with drugs and alcohol, but the memories still fester in his mind. After a long period of continual intoxication, he meets his old martial arts teacher, Dindabe, in a bar and agrees to resume his studies. The workouts flush the poisons from his system and he begins to regain an interest in life as he regains his proficiency in the arts, but he still lives from day to day, with no long term interests.

Dindabe introduces him to Moon, a Sister of the Shroud, and encourages him to become her student. Ferret goes with Moon to the training center on Manus, near Wewak, New Guinea. Although doubting his own commitment, he takes the name Pen and gradually becomes engrossed in the program and finally graduates.

This novel is a tale of enlightenment. Pen has no real faith in himself, for everyone around him has either turned against him or died. Before Pen could accomplish anything, he must recognize himself as a person and have faith in that person.

Recommended for Perry fans and anyone who enjoys tales of martial arts in a SF setting.

Dedicated Reader
I have read all of his books and he has got to be one of the most outstanding authors around. This particular book I would consider his masterpiece.

97th step
This book is so good I read it and all the other ones in the series at LEAST once a year! Steve Perry is an amazing author!

Character Is the Issue: How People With Integrity Can Revolutionize America
Published in Hardcover by Broadman & Holman Publishers (September, 1997)
Authors: Mike Huckabee and John Perry
Average review score:

The True Voice of Arkansas
Arkansas' current Governor Mike Huckabee is certainly not politically correct. He is a man of integrity, convictions, patriotism, Christianity, and honesty-quite a departure from his two most recent predecessors.

The bulk of this disquisition concerns the attempted hijacking of his first inauguration. The convicted Governor Jim Guy Tucker changed his mind about resigning less than ten minutes before Lieutenant Governor Huckabee was to be sworn in. The State Constitutional Crisis was quickly thwarted by the united outrage of Arkansas' heavily Democratic controlled legislature.

In relating this tale of public servants putting their honor above their party, Huckabee does not descant on the obvious irony. In this scenario it was the Democratic Party and Arkansas politicians who saw their duty and boldly threatened an expeditious impeachment proceeding to restrain a law breaking chief executive. Not too many years later the National Democratic Party abnegated its duty when an Arkansas-bred Chief Executive contemptuously subjected the country to a Constitutional Crises.

The governor devotes less time to several other segments of his public life and includes a few biographical sketches. Whatever the subject, he displays a trenchant mind and a true dedication to serving mankind. It is not difficult to see why he was previously very successful as a minister. In addition to the clergy and politics, he may also have a calling as an author. Like his second book "Kids Who Kill," I read this one all the way through in less than 24 hours.

Governor Huckabee is truly a 'great' American !
Of the countless political books and memoirs I have read in over 25 years in political affairs Governor Mike Huckabee's book, "CHARACTER IS THE ISSUE" is the most refreshing, outstanding and wonderful political memoir I have read.

Governor Huckabee's book should be read be all who seek and want leaders with integrity, honor and principle.

President John F. Kennedy wrote that great historic book "PROFILES IN COURAGE" --- Governor Huckabee of Arkansas is truly a 'profile in courage and integrity' !

God bless Governor Huckabee of Arkansas.

We put the wrong Arkansan in the White House!
A sobering expose' of sordid Arkansas politics as seen from the eyes of a Baptist preacher turned Governor of Arkansas. Mike Huckabee is a known quantity, a splendid man of character. Gov. Huckabee sought to serve his fellow man from a larger pulpit; politics. On the journey to the Statehouse he exposes all of the "characters" masquerading as public servants and himself proves that "Character Is the Issue"!

On the Bus: The Complete Guide to the Legendary Trip of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters and the Birth of the Counterculture
Published in Paperback by Thunder's Mouth Press (February, 1997)
Authors: Paul Perry, Michael Schwartz, Neil Ortenberg, and Ken Babbs
Average review score:

this is just great
this was just great. for those of us who couldn't be there for perry lane, the bus trip, or the acid tests, this is a great account of the time. you don't realize how important kesey was to the movement until you read this. on the bus is really a quick bio of kesey. it helps you to understand how kesey took over where kerouac left off. you really feel as if you know kesey and neal after finishing this book. if you are a bohemian, beat, hippie, or any combination, then this is the book to get.

Great Book, Lots of Pictures of the Pranksters
I bought the book after reading Electric Kool-Aide Acid Test for the third time. I really wanted to know more about what Mountain Girl, Cassidy, Gretchin Fetchin, and Babbs looked like, and scenes from the Trip. What a great book. I would recommend it to anyone who is reading, has read, or will be reading the book, Electric Kool-Aide Acid Test. This would be a great companion as your were reading it, and were exposed to the characters in the book.

A must for any who wishes to travel further...
Anyone who is a Kesey fan MUST read this book. It is basically the photo album which correlates with Wolfe's Electric Kool-Ade Acid Test. It gives more insight into the minds of the pranksters and others. I highly recommend this book to any who is interested in the counterculture. The book as well as the trip are truly legendary.

Basic Counseling Techniques: A Beginning Therapist's Toolkit
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (December, 2002)
Author: C. Wayne Perry
Average review score:

Wonderful
I owned this book when it was simply a self-published, Acrobat Reader, file. We used the text as a basic textbook in an introductory course in Family Therapy. Dr. Perry writes in a straightforward, non-technical, yet thorough manner. The reader will find the "Living into the Lesson" exercises at the end of each chapter particularly helpful.

Dr. Perry had this text published at the repeated insistence of his students at the Southern Christian University. I am proud to have been one of them.

Worth the read
I hate reading textbooks because they are written so dryly. Dr. Perry's book is written in an interesting, understandable, and applicable way. I have found this book extremely easy to read, often reaching the end of a chapter far sooner than I anticipated. His examples and practical manner of writing make concepts become clear. He offers "how to" approaches in different styles for the different types of problems that counselors might encounter. Definately a tool to keep close at hand for any new counselor.

Basic Counseling Techniques: A Beginning Therapist's Toolkit
This book is an outstanding beginning help manual for therapists just starting out. The basics are easy understood in a concise and clear manner. Questions no one thought to answer in my training were answered in the book, I'd recommend this to counselor's of all levels.

The Case of the Deadly Toy (A Perry Mason Mystery)
Published in Hardcover by Bentley Publishers (September, 1981)
Author: Erle Stanley Gardner
Average review score:

Humorous
This work of Gardner is so great! Gardner was able to combine suspense with a tinge of humor. It will keep you glued to your seat and keep you guessing who is the real murderer.

It keeps drawing you in
When I first read this book, I was going through a book store, looking for Agatha Christie, when I stumbled upon this book. At first I was sceptical, not sure how good it would be, after all, it was about a lawyer. As soon as started the first chapter I fell in love with the book! The different characters. The smooth talking Perry Maon. The reliable, feminine Della Street. Paul Drake, the detective relying on soggy hamburgers to fill in for steak dinners. A very compelling book to read!

As good as the series.....
and that's good! Of course, I am talking about the old black and white one hour episodes, which , even though before my time, I enjoy immensely in syndication. This was the first Perry Mason I have read and I was amazed how well it stacked up to the show. Or, I should say how well the show measures up to the book. As I was reading the story I could visualize Perry Mason (a la Raymond Burr), and his cast of Paul Drake and Della Street as if I was watching the book as a movie. There are plenty of nasty characters, convaluted motives, and a slick attorney in Perry Mason. If you liked the show, the book follows the same pattern of developing the storyline. Nasty person that no one likes, murder, many suspects, wrongfully charged heroine, and the savior Perry Mason. Lot's of fun!

Dinner Tonight: Deliciously Simple Weekday Meals You Can Get to the Table in No Time
Published in Paperback by Newsday Books (February, 2000)
Author: Marge Perry
Average review score:

A good cook
Finally, a practical cookbook for putting together tasty, wholesome dinners when you are nearly out of energy. Bye-bye carry-out.

Marge Perry was featured in a recent Home Magazine article. I tried a couple of her recipes and ordered the book. I was not disappointed. The dinners are easy to make but don't taste like the "quick & easy" recipes they are. I've made several recipes from the book and my favorite (so far) is chicken with oranges and feta cheese. My husband is wild for the macaroni and cheese (made with a lot of tomatoes.)

I particularly like the way Ms. Perry keeps the number of pots & pans to a minimum. I've cooked my spinach in the pasta water for years but Ms. Perry has even more suggestions for quickly cooking the veggies along with another part of the dinner.

Novice and experienced cooks will appreciate the clear, simple instructions. This is obviously a home cook's book, not a book written by a professional chef with a professional support staff. As much as I enjoy the books written by the celebrity chefs, this is a book I can really use, night after night.

BUY THIS BOOK! IT WORKS!
As a career person who works a lot of late hours I was forced to eat a lot of bad, unhealthy take-out. Then I found this book and my cooking passion was allowed to flourish. Since my book arrived I've literally cut out ordering in and spend the few minutes these recipes take to make and nourish myself in the process.

My Pick
This was a gift from my girlfriend and she has been reaping the rewards. I love it. The attractive, easy to read recipes are tasty and delicious. All the ingredients were available at my local supermarket and the serving suggestions are great. I love the way the book is broken out by food types: chicken recipes chapter, Pasta chapter etc. Thanks to the author for a practical kitchen tool!
